To achieve this, medical transformers provide galvanic isolation to separate the sensors from the electronics, maintaining a low voltage on the sensor side and thus separating the primary from the secondary circuits.

Other requirements for the transformers include amongst others the need for the transformers to be designed to minimize electromagnetic interference (EMI) and be EMI-resistant themselves, so as not to interfere with the operation of other medical equipment and their ability to withstand overcurrent and overloads without compromising performance or safety.
